Importers and exporters have an obligation to exercise due diligence in conforming to regulations. What does this mean - importers and exporters have a responsibility to self regulate and to ensure they are compliant with HMRC and international trade laws.

Ensuring due diligence starts with a written plan, known as a procedure manual. While the regulations provide the do's and dont's, they don't reflect the specific processes that result in your business' compliance. That can only be determined by you and should be detailed within your procedure manual, including sufficient details describing your business records and who is responsible for ensuring they are retained. These procedures should be periodically reviewed and updated to remain compliant.

Without a documented procedure manual, a company may be found uncompliant if audited by HMRC.
