TRADE UPDATES FROM THE BRITISH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

This month's updates from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC)

 
► The BCC took part in a roundtable discussion on trade policy with special advisers to the Shadow Cabinet, covering UK-EU trade, India, supply chains, US and China. 

The BCC raised issues with the EU Embassy which were highlighted by the Chamber Network. This covered issues about compliance with the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism reporting requirements for UK companies. A summary of current EU guidance can be found here

The BCC gave evidence this week to the Business and Trade Select Committee enquiry into the UK’s terms of accession to CPTPP. Watch William Bain’s session at the Committee here covering rules of origin, trade policy and export support, and read the transcript here

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) announced further changes in policy around CE marking and testing for UKCA. Legislation is due by the spring which will provide greater trader certainty, as well as extending the new flexibilities into three more areas. Read the notice from DBT here and BCC reaction here

The BCC have been raising further issues on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) reporting and compliance from members with the EU Embassy. The European Commission has extended by 30 days the deadline for the initial reporting period for some businesses in scope of reporting requirements in the CBAM and experiencing difficulties in making their declaration. Affected firms and their EU customers may seek 'delayed submission

The BCC has had conversations with Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds about their proposals on improving trade with the EU. They also spoke with Shadow Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds about trade priorities with India, and the Chair of the House of Commons Select Committee on Business and Trade, Liam Byrne about EU trade.

The BCC took part in a roundtable with Business Minister Nus Ghani MP on the effect of Red Sea crossing disruption on container availability and costs as well as supply chain delays. They will be taking part in further roundtables with the Business Minister, if you have any comments you would like forwarding to the BCC regarding this topic please contact us.

► The BCC took part in a trade roundtable hosted by the UK Accreditation Service. Policy changes on markings of industrial and electrical goods were discussed as well as how to advance future campaign work around mutual recognition of conformity assessment.

► They met with the Japan External Trade Organisation. During the meeting the BCC discussed their experiences of boosting utilisation of trade agreements by businesses, including the UK’s trade agreement with Japan.
